New Fishing Regulations and Tournament Policy Announced for Stonewall Jackson Lake SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. - New fishing regulations will be in place for Stonewall Jackson Lake in 2014, according to Frank Jezioro, Director of the Division of Natural Resources. “Anglers will be able to keep a daily creel of six black bass, one of which may be longer than 18 inches. This represents a change from the catch-and-release regulation in place since the lake was created more than 20 years ago,” said Jezioro. The regulation change was proposed by DNR fisheries biologists who began noticing a decline in physical condition of largemouth bass and increased numbers of spotted bass. Canaan Valley Resort Features Magic Carpet Rides DAVIS, W.Va. - Skiers and tubing enthusiasts will not step inside Steppenwolf’s 1960s-era song “Magic Carpet Ride,” but they will find an outdoor conveyor that transports people up the slopes at Canaan Valley Resort State Park. Deer Hunters in West Virginia Harvest 56,333 Bucks during the 2013 Buck Firearms Season SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. - Preliminary data collected from game checking stations across the state indicate deer hunters in West Virginia harvested 56,333 bucks during the two-week buck firearms season, which ran from Nov. 25 through Dec. 7, 2013, according to Frank Jezioro, director of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (DNR). The 2013 buck harvest was slightly higher than the 2012 harvest of 56,276. Canadian Man Fined for Unlawful Capture and Transportation of West Virginia Turtles SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – David C. Matton, a resident of Windsor, Ontario, paid more than $2,200 in fines after being charged by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Environment Canada for violations of regulations protecting turtles. Matton purchased wood turtles in West Virginia and transported them in foreign commerce in violation of the Lacey Act. Cold temperatures bring out the TF10s at Canaan Valley Resort State Park DAVIS, W.Va. - The TechnoAlpin TF10s are the big snow guns at the Canaan Valley Resort ski areas and this week’s cold temperatures have them shooting snow in preparation for the new winter sports season. Weighing in at less than at ton and a length of almost 6 feet, the snow gun fleet at Canaan Valley is capable of creating and throwing snow for 200 feet or farther. 150th Anniversary Memorial and Monument Dedication of the Battle of Droop Mountain Set for Nov. 6, 2 p.m. HILLSBORO, W.Va. – The Battle of Droop Mountain was fought Nov. 6, 1863, and was a major turning point of the Civil War. On Nov. 6, 2013, 150 years to the day, a memorial service and native stone monument will be unveiled at Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park near Hillsboro in Pocahontas County. This summer, Supt. “Times Change” – West Virginia State Parks Cabin Reservation Policy Changes for Remainder of Summer SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – For the rest of this summer, visitors may reserve cabins at West Virginia’s state parks for a shorter-than-normal time period. Lincoln-like conditions return to Holly River; park staff hopeful to have electric power restored by July 31 HACKER VALLEY, W.Va. – A two-mile stretch of underground electrical cable at Holly River has conductivity failure. “We know the new underground service and transformers are sound. The remaining two miles of original underground service that seemed fine have now apparently developed a problem,” said Ken McClintic, park superintendent.  Holly River State Park was a victim of Super Storm Sandy in October 2012, causing the park to have one mile of electrical service destroyed and consequently rebuilt. 2012 West Virginia Big Buck Contest Winners Announced SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources (WVDNR) has announced the winners of the 2012 West Virginia Big Buck Contest, according to Gene Thorn, chairman of the West Virginia Big Buck Contest Review Committee. The contest is co-sponsored by WVDNR, Izaak Walton League of West Virginia, West Virginia Bowhunters Association, West Virginia Muzzle Loaders Association, West Virginia Physically Challenged Advisory Board and Toyota to recognize sportsmen and women who take an extraordinarily big antlered buck in West Virginia. This past year, 189 hunters had their deer antlers scored at one of the six WVDNR district offices, field offices, or the West Virginia Hunting and Fishing Show in Charleston. Shay No. 4 repeating honors after 50 years on June 15 at Cass Scenic Railroad CASS, W.Va. – Originally numbered 5, this Shay locomotive at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park began service at Birch Valley Lumber Company, Tioga, W.Va., in 1922. Mower Lumber Company at Cass, W.Va., acquired the engine in 1943 and re-numbered it No. 4. 50th year of operation - Climb Cheat Mountain on the Cass Scenic Railroad in 2013 Golden Anniversary Run Scheduled June 15 GREEN BANK, W.Va. – In 1900, a community’s economy would rely on logging timber on Cheat Mountain and the mill operations in town. Cass, West Virginia, was a logging town.  In 1960, after years of operation, that industry was worked out and regeneration of a different forest and community would begin again. On June 15, 1963, that new economy would become Cass Scenic Railroad, a tourist train. Great Backyard Bird Count at Pipestem, Cacapon, Blackwater Falls state parks part of national data collection Feb. 15-18 PIPESTEM, W.Va. – The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is an annual four-day event for bird watchers from novice to notable ornithologists. “For four days anyone can count and identify birds in their backyard, or in my case at Pipestem State Park, submit the information online and have our West Virginia information become part of a national database,” said Pipestem Naturalist Jim Phillips. The minimum time is at least a 15 minute observation on any of the four days or longer and multiple places or days. “I’ll be counting at our Pipestem bird walks and when I get home, I’ll count in my backyard,” Phillips said. West Virginia Hunters Harvest a Record 2,683 Black Bears in 2012 SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia hunters harvested 2,683 black bears during the combined 2012 archery and firearms seasons, according to Colin Carpenter, Black Bear Project leader for the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. The preliminary harvest for the combined 2012 seasons was 34 percent higher than the 2011 harvest of 2,009 bears and 12 percent higher than the previous record harvest of 2,392 established in 2010. West Virginia Hunters Harvest 1,233 Fall Turkeys in 2012 SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – Preliminary figures for the 2012 fall turkey hunting season show a harvest of 1,233 turkeys, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. West Virginia Hunters Harvest 131,444 Deer in 2012 SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. –  Preliminary counts of game checking tags indicate West Virginia hunters harvested a total of 131,444 white-tailed deer during the recently completed bucks-only, antlerless, muzzleloader, archery and youth/Class Q/Class XS deer seasons, according to Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro. This year’s total harvest was three percent below the 2011 deer harvest of 135,696. A total of 56,658 bucks, 45,169 antlerless season deer, 24,571 bow-killed deer and 5,046 muzzleloader season deer were taken during the 2012 season.

New Tube Park now open at Canaan Valley Resort State Park DAVIS, W.Va. – Canaan Valley Tube Park officially opened Friday, January 11, 2013, giving outdoor enthusiasts another option for winter fun.  Downhill skiing was in full force on 27 of Canaan’s 42 ski trails as Canaan Valley Tube Park hosted more than 50 attendees for the 1:30 p.m. opening ceremony.  Park Superintendent Rob Gilligan served as Master of Ceremonies, introducing speakers that included Gerard Gabrys, CEO, Guest Services, Inc ,  Keith Burdette, Secretary ,West Virginia Department of Commerce;  Frank Jezioro, Director,  West Virginia Division of Natural Resources; and Ken Caplinger, Parks Chief, West Virginia State Park system.  Many area residents, facility staff,  legislators and elected officials from the immediate area, construction and project personnel, and media attended.  A Florida family visiting Canaan Valley for tubing became part of the celebration and were recognized. http://www.wvdnr.gov/2013news/13news004.shtm Fri, 11 Jan 2013 16:20:00 GMT Rob Gilligan, Supt.  Robert.W.Gilligan@wv.gov 5

New State Record Yellow Perch SOUTH CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The new state weight record for yellow perch now belongs to Joshua Wayne Estes of Hurricane, W.Va., according to Frank Jezioro, Director of the Division of Natural Resources.
