West Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas 2

Following in the footsteps of the first West Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas, 1984-1989, the second Breeding Bird Atlas was conducted 2009-2014 and resulted in analyses and detailed maps of breeding occurrence of 170 species. The project amassed more than 100,000 observations submitted by hundreds of volunteers, and the results will serve to guide conservation work by WVDNR and its partners for years to come.

Following the completion of fieldwork, WVDNR staff spent 5 years proofing datasets, conducting data analyses, and writing and editing the manuscript for the forthcoming book "The Second Atlas of Breeding Birds in West Virginia", to be published by Penn State Press. The book is being produced both for the enjoyment of bird enthusiasts and to inform the work of conservation professionals. The book is anticipated to be on sale by the middle of 2021. Updates on the timeline for publication will be provided here as they become available.
