Governor’s One Shot Whitetail Hunt and Banquet December 2-3, 2007, Stonewall Resort State Park, Roanoke WV

Special Guest: Brigadier General Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager, USAF, Retired

Several governors and invited guests will join West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin III and West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro for a special event designed to draw attention to hunting opportunities in the Mountain State and to the Hunters Helping the Hungry program. WVDNR and the West Virginia Trophy Hunters Association are sponsoring the “WV Governor’s One Shot Whitetail Hunt” to be held December 2-3, 2007, at Stonewall Resort State Park near Roanoke in Lewis County, 2 miles off Interstate 79 at exit 91. Special guest for this event will be Brigadier General Charles E. “Chuck” Yeager, USAF, Retired.

Participants will site in their firearms at the Stonewall Wildlife Management Area on Sunday, December 2, and the next day will be taken for guided hunts on private property near the park. The hunt will be for antlerless deer only, and the deer harvested at this event will be donated to the Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH) program, with the meat to be distributed to needy families across the state.

Earlier this year Gov. Manchin and other state governors participated in a One Shot Antelope event in Lander, Wyoming, and he had a successful hunt. He decided to bring that experience to West Virginia, where whitetail deer hunting opportunities are among the best in the East.

“We’ve invited several state governors to our event, and we’re hopeful that they will take this opportunity to learn about what West Virginia has to offer outdoor sportsmen, and also to help promote the worthy Hunters Helping the Hungry program that means so much to so many less fortunate West Virginians,” Manchin said.

The 2007 season marks the 16th consecutive year that the Division of Natural Resources has sponsored the HHH program, which provides thousands of pounds of donated venison to hungry West Virginians each year. More information about HHH can be found at www.wvdnr.gov or by calling 304-558-2771.

In addition to donated venison, the Hunters Helping the Hungry program is dependent entirely upon monetary donations. Awards for participants in the One Shot Whitetail Hunt will be presented during a banquet at Stonewall Resort State Park Monday, December 3, beginning with a social at 6 p.m. All proceeds from the participants’ entry fees and banquet tickets, above expenses, will go to the HHH program. Tickets are available to the public for $60 per person or $100 per couple. Also, corporate tables of 10 are available for $500. The number of tickets is limited.
