Potato Knob Trail Project at Holly River State Park To Receive Recreational Trails Program Achievement Award

The Potato Knob Trail project at Holly River State Park, in Hacker Valley, W.Va., has been named a winner of the Recreational Trails Program ( RTP) Achievement Award in the Construction and Design category. The award will be presented during a ceremony on June 14 in Washington, D.C.

  Given by the Coalition for Recreational Trails, the RTP Achievement Awards recognize outstanding trail projects funded by the national RTP. The RTP returns a portion of federal gasoline taxes generated by non-highway motorized recreation to states across the country for the maintenance and construction of trails and other trail-related uses.  

“This is a very prestigious national award and the staff at Holly River State Park , the members of the Holly River Foundation and all the volunteers that worked on this project are to be commended for their hard work,” says Dave Lombardo , district administrator with West Virginia State Parks.

The project at the Potato Knob Trail in Holly River State Park includes a 120-foot long boardwalk to an overlook that allows seniors and people with disabilities to view the Upper Falls. This trail and overlook meets U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service Trail Accessibility Guidelines. The grant was awarded in 2001 and the project was completed by volunteers and park maintenance personnel in the spring of 2005.
