National Trails Day June 2 at West Virginia State Parks

West Virginia State Parks will host National Trails Day events at various parks on Saturday, June 2. National Trails Day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society. Its purpose is to promote hiking trails throughout the nation. Community involvement in trail use and maintenance has been a tradition for more than 100 years.  

Hike ‘n’ Bike National Trails Dayat Twin Falls Resort State Park

Throughout the day, a series of guided hikes and rides will be conducted. Participants will meet at 10 a.m. at the Scout Field parking lot.  A mountain bike skills clinic with Mike McGraw will start the bikers off with mountain bike rides following the clinic. In addition, there will be a morning hike on the Huckleberry Trail at 10 a.m. and one at 1 p.m. on the Cliffside Trail.  This event is for all age groups. Hike Across West Virginia at Cacapon Resort State Park

This event will begin at the southern boundary on top of Cacapon Mountain where visitors are able to see the Virginia border. Participants will hike the 10 mile distance to the northern boundary for a view of the Potomac River.  Cacapon Mountain is the highest mountain west of the three Eastern Panhandle counties. This hike will travel down the ridge of the mountain with a gradual elevation change from 2,350 feet to 1,700 feet. The final view near Prospect Rock provides a wonderful panoramic scene of three states and two rivers. Hikers will meet at the Nature Center at Cacapon State Park at 8 a.m. and then caravan to the overlook to begin the hike and a shuttle will provide a ride back through Berkeley Springs. To join in with this hike, please contact the park naturalist, Kelly Smith, at Cacapon by calling (304) 258-1022 or 1-800-CALL WVA.

National Trails Day 10-mile Trek at Greenbrier River Trail

Hikers will meet at 9 a.m. at the Greenbrier River Trail on Auto Road in Renick. State Park personnel will then shuttle participants 10 miles up the trail for a hike back to Renick. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch and plenty of water.
