David Murphy Named Law Enforcement Section Chief; Brad DeBord Promoted to Lieutenant

DNR’s new Law Enforcement Section Chief is David Murphy, who was promoted to the rank of colonel January 1, 2007. He had been serving as acting chief of LES since the retirement of Col. James Fields in June 2006. DNR Director Frank Jezioro pinned the “eagles” on Col. Murphy’s collars during a brief ceremony in Charleston January 2.

David Murphy has more than 25 years of law enforcement service. He started as a conservation officer in Mingo and Braxton counties, and in 1989 he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and assigned to Charleston Headquarters as assistant hunter/boating education coordinator. A few months later he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and was assigned as statewide hunter/boating education coordinator and training officer. In 1996 he was promoted to the rank of captain, and promoted again in 1999 to the rank of major, serving as assistant chief of law enforcement until his promotion to lieutenant colonel in 2005.

“No one knows the workings and needs of DNR law enforcement better than Dave Murphy,” DNR Director Frank Jezioro said. “During the past few months he has proven that he has what it takes to run the state’s best law enforcement agency, and I look forward to working with him for years to come.”
