Barbour County Hunter Guilty of Illegal Killing of Deer

Hunting deer out of season has proven costly to a Barbour County man. On December 9, 2006, Lawrence J. (Jimmy) Gillis, age 37 of Moatsville, paid $1,250 in fines and court costs as a result of charges filed for violations of West Virginia’s hunting laws, according to Sgt. Roy Cool of the Law Enforcement Section of the Division of Natural Resources.

Gillis entered guilty pleas in Barbour County magistrate court to seven charges. Those included two counts of illegal possession of deer meat, two counts of failure to check in deer, one count of hunting after legally killing a deer the same day, one count of illegal deer kill, and one count of failure to field tag a deer. An investigation by Cpl. Gary Straughan, Conservation Officer Bob Waybright and Sgt. Roy Cool resulted in Gillis’ arrest as he was returning to his residence on an ATV after a day of illegal hunting. Officers also confiscated several packages of venison processed from the illegally killed deer.
