DMV to Provide ATV Safety Awareness Courses At National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration, Stonewall Resort State Park, September 23rd and 24th

State law requires everyone under the age of 18 to attend an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) Safety Awareness Course conducted by the West Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles before operating an ATV, according to Mark Holmes, State ATV Safety Program Coordinator for the DMV.

The DMV will offer this course at the National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration at Stonewall Resort State Park in Lewis County (Interstate 79 exit 91) on Saturday, September 23 and Sunday, September 24. Courses will be offered every hour beginning at 10 a.m. through 4 p.m. each day.

“The National Hunting and Fishing Days Celebration provides DMV with a great opportunity to speak about ATV safety to a large number of kids in one venue,” Holmes said. “Nationwide, hunters and anglers make up 80 percent of people using ATVs for recreational purposes, and the two-day event at Stonewall Resort State Park is a perfect fit for our program. We are pleased to work with the event hosts, the Division of Natural Resources and the West Virginia Wildlife Federation, to provide this opportunity.”

The 30-minute awareness course covers the West Virginia ATV laws passed in 2004 and the basic tenets of safe riding, including the use of proper safety gear while riding. Emphasis is placed on the use of helmets, because under the new laws anyone under the age of 18 must wear a helmet while riding on an ATV.

During West Virginia’s Celebration of National Hunting and Fishing Days, nearly 20,000 wildlife enthusiasts will be in attendance to try their hand at everything from archery, shooting, fly-fishing, and kids fishing derby, to list only a few. In addition, attendees will also have opportunities to sit in on several other wildlife demonstrations or visit one of the hundred-plus vendors on hand. Admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children under age 15, and children 3 and under free.
