Applications Available for 2006 Special Class N or NN Antlerless Deer Hunt in Hampshire County

Applications for the Special Class N or NN Antlerless Deer Season on October 27-28, 2006, in Hampshire County are now available at West Virginia hunting and fishing license agents in Hampshire and surrounding counties, Division of Natural Resources District Offices, Elkins office and Charleston office, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the DNR Wildlife Resources Section. These applications may also be downloaded from the DNR web page at www.wvdnr.gov . Applications must be received by the DNR before the close of business on August 18, 2006. These applications are for antlerless deer hunting opportunities in Hampshire County where wildlife biologists will be monitoring for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

“A primary objective of this special Class N or NN Antlerless Deer Season in Hampshire County is to continue surveillance for CWD and to determine its prevalence and distribution within the county,” noted Taylor . “Selected deer checking stations in the county will be operated by Wildlife Resources Section personnel, and biological data along with tissue samples will be collected and sent to a certified laboratory for CWD testing.” Protocols similar to those used last year during the buck season in Hampshire County will be in place to allow hunters to check the DNR website for CWD test results on deer from which samples were collected.

Both residents and nonresidents hunters must apply for one of the 4,500 permits to participate in this special Class N or NN Antlerless Deer Season. Resident landowners, their resident children and resident tenants who permanently live on the property are not required to apply for a permit if hunting on their own property.

For complete information on this special Class N or NN Antlerless Deer Season in Hampshire County, consult the 2006-2007 Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary, which will be available in late July at license agents, DNR offices, or visit online at www.wvdnr.gov .
