“Grace O' Malley: An Irish Pirate” Dinner Theater

North Bend State Park

November 12, 2005

Cairo , W.Va.- North Bend State Park will feature Karen Vuranch in a dinner theater performance of “Grace O'Malley: An Irish Pirate” on November 12.

In this performance Vuranch will play an Irish pirate from the 16th century who sailed the high seas during the Renaissance. The colorful stories of her life can be documented in fact. Grace O'Malley was known for being outspoken and always bold. Grace commanded an army of men and is known for her battles against the conquest of Ireland by its powerful neighbor, England . Grace was a leading political leader before women had personal power. Her political power even captured the attention of Queen Elizabeth I, whom she met. Through the story of Grace O'Malley, audiences can begin to understand the contemporary political struggles in Ireland by learning about the era in which these conflicts arose.

Vuranch will perform “Grace O'Malley” in Chautauqua style. She will monologue the life of Grace and then answer questions in character. Finally, she will break character and answer questions about Grace and the Renaissance from contemporary perspective. Using actual historical accounts, she will recreate the life of a woman who fought for both Irish and her own personal freedom.
