Three Buck Bag Limit Effective This Fall

The bag limit for antlered deer (bucks) has been changed to three per year, which may be taken by bow, firearm or muzzleloader as provided in the respective seasons, according to Curtis I. Taylor, Chief of the Wildlife Resources Section of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Hunters who participate in more than one season must decide how and when to harvest bucks to stay within the calendar bag restriction.

“This regulation should accomplish two goals that hunters have requested,” said Taylor. “First, it will more evenly allocate a limited resource (antlered deer) among all hunters. Second, some hunters will choose to pass on smaller bucks and wait for a larger antlered trophy animal. If this regulation change is successful in accomplishing these goals, more yearling bucks will survive in the population and older-aged bucks will become more common.”

For complete information, hunters should consult the 2005-2006 West Virginia Hunting and Trapping Regulations Summary available at any DNR Office, license agents, or by visiting the DNR Web site at www.wvdnr.gov .
