Harvest Day at Cass Scenic Railroad State Park

October 1, 2005

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in Pocahontas County will be hosting Harvest Day on Saturday, October 1, 2005. This day-long special event will start at 9:45 a.m. and is full of old-fashion fun, live entertainment, fall colors and a special evening train to Whittaker Station. All of this is in addition to Cass's regular excursions and interpretive programs during the morning and afternoon.

Several chainsaw carving demonstrations by the Fanning brothers will be scheduled throughout the day, and mountain dancer Lou Maiuri will be demonstrating and teaching dance from 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. Local authors Bill McNeel and Harold Crist will be available to sign copies of their books from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Apple butter making, honey making, storytelling, old-time games and other surprises are planned to make it a memorable day for all ages.

The Harvest Special train will depart at 5 p.m. and will feature judging of period attire as well as storytelling by Granny Sue and folk music by The McKenzies. Prizes for best period attire (any character 1902-1960 period)  in children's and adult's categories will be given, with a grand prize of two free 2006 Murder Mystery or Fiddles and Vittles Dinner Train tickets to be awarded to the best overall costume.

All events are free of charge except for train rides. Train schedules and general park information can be accessed at www.cassrailroad.com . For more information or for reservations, please call (304) 456-4300.
