Jim Fowler, Former Cohost of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom,

Visits West Virginia State Wildlife Center

Jim Fowler, former cohost of Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom television program, visited the West Virginia State Wildlife Center on May 23, 2005 as part of an outdoor educational program entitled Wild and Wonderful West Virginia .

“The opportunity to have someone as well known as Jim Fowler here at the Wildlife Center doesn't happen very often,“ said Rob Silvester, biologist with the Division of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Section. “His message on sustainability of the natural world is one that we should all take seriously,” added Silvester.

Fowler discussed several issues, including urban sprawl and how hundreds of acres of once prime wildlife habitat in the US has been lost to the construction of shopping centers, housing subdivisions and other developments. Nearly 130 students from Union Elementary School were on hand at the Center for the event. In addition to Fowler, Jim Fregonara, biologist with the Division of Natural Resources, Wildlife Resources Section, presented a program on West Virginia Snakes and Ron and Wendy Perrone of the Three Rivers Avian Center presented an informative program on West Virginia 's Birds of Prey.

Mutual of Omaha 's Wild Kingdom premiered in 1963 . Along with cohost Marlin Perkins, Fowler went to the far reaches of the world and introduced millions of viewers to various wildlife species and their natural habitats. Fowler made numerous appearances on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and he has been the wildlife expert for the Today Show since1988.
