Boardwalk and Observation Decks at Blackwater Falls State Park

Reopen With a New Look

Access to a view of one of the Mountain State's most awe-inspiring sites, Blackwater Falls, is now available as a reconstructed boardwalk and observation decks reopen to visitors at Blackwater Falls State Park in Davis, West Virginia .

“We want to let folks know that we are improving the safety of the falls' access for our thousands of annual visitors,” said Rob Gilligan, superintendent of Blackwater Falls State Park . “The boardwalk was built in the early 1960s and was last refurbished in the late 1980s, so it was time to make sure this natural wonder will be accessible and safe for the next generation.”

Reconstruction on the boardwalk and observation decks started on August 16, 2004, by Ryan Environmental Construction of Clarksburg, West Virginia. It was completed on December 1, 2004 .

“The unique and fabulous nature of Blackwater Falls is for all to see,” Gilligan says. The falls are among the most photographed sites in West Virginia. The amber-colored waters plunge five stories then twist and tumble through an eight-mile long gorge. The "black" water is a result of tannic acid from fallen hemlock and red spruce needles.
