National Trails Day June 4 at West Virginia State Parks

West Virginia State Parks will host National Trails Day events on Saturday, June 4. National Trails Day is sponsored by the American Hiking Society. Its purpose is to promote hiking trails throughout the nation. Community involvement in trail use and maintenance has been a more than 100-year tradition.

"National Trails Day is an annual event that celebrates trails and their many uses ," says Programming Coordinator Kim McHenry . "Aside from hiking, state parks will be offering other activities such as bike riding, horseback riding and trail cleanup. Events and trails are offered to accommodate people from all walks of life, regardless of age, fitness level or physical condition. It's sure to be a lot of fun."

West Virginia State Parks will feature a hike on the Greenbrier River Trail in Pocahontas County . Hikers will meet at the trail head parking lot at North Caldwell (Southern Terminus) at 8:30 a.m. to hike 10 miles to Anthony in celebration of National Trails Day. Participants are encouraged to bring lunch and plenty of water. Other state parks will also host events to honor this special day.

"Visitors will have a chance to travel to their favorite state park, forest or wildlife management area and log miles hiked on trails," McHenry says. "Stop by the park office area and pick up a mileage log and join hundreds of other people hiking that day. Mail the mileage log and receive a state park gift and a certificate honoring your mileage."

To participate or for more details about National Trails Day events, please contact Kim McHenry at 304-558-2764, parks@westvirginia.com , or at the Division of Natural Resources, West Virginia State Parks, State Capitol Complex, Building 3, Room 709, Charleston, West Virginia 25305.
