42nd Annual Youth Environmental Day, Saturday May 21, 2005

North Bend State Park , Cairo , West Virginia -- Saturday May 21, 2005 , is the date for the 42nd Annual West Virginia Youth Environmental Day at North Bend State Park near Cairo , West Virginia . This popular event, which draws thousands of young people from across the state each year, is co-sponsored by the Environmental Resources Section of the Division of Natural Resources and Columbia Gas Transmission of Charleston. Columbia Gas Transmission is the corporate sponsor for the West Virginia Youth Environmental Program Awards. The Youth Environmental Day activities this year are being sponsored in part by Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc.

 

  Friday evening, May 20, participants camping overnight will have the opportunity to watch an outdoor movie and enjoy popcorn at the North Bend State Park Shelter #3 at 8:30 p.m.

 

  Youth Environmental Awards Day activities will be held Saturday, May 21, also at Shelter #3, and will begin with greetings from special guests Clyde Maston of Columbia Gas Transmission; Pat Nestor, WVU Extension Service; Steve Jones, Superintendent of North Bend State Park; as well as several other guests and award sponsors. Appearances will be made by Smokey Bear, Eco the Owl, Eddie Eagle, and Thunder the American Bald Eagle from the Raptor Rehabilitation Center in Morgantown .

 

  Awards totaling over $11,000 will be presented in all categories beginning Saturday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. Many exhibits will also be on display for everyone's enjoyment. Following the presentation of awards around 3:00 p.m. , there will be a fishing contest, games, and crafts for all participants. North Bend staff will also lead a hike on the North Bend Rail Trail. A dance is scheduled at Shelter #3 Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. , for those again camping overnight.
