DNR's Larry Hines and Capt. Steve Stewart Selected for Honors

By Wild Turkey Federation State Chapter

The West Virginia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has selected two West Virginia Division of Natural Resources employees for special honors. The awards were presented by President Harold Davis at the January 15, 2005 banquet held in Flatwoods.

•  Larry Hines of Hedgesville was selected 2004 Wildlife Manager of the Year. Hines is a 25-year veteran wildlife manager in the eastern panhandle stationed at the 22,000 acre Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area in Morgan and Berkeley counties. He was recommended for the award by his supervisors based upon superior performance of his duties and continued dedication to the management of the wild turkey. He was instrumental in trapping turkeys for restocking in other parts of West Virginia in the 1980s. Hines has created numerous herbaceous clearings on the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area for use by wild turkey broods. He was the recipient of a grant to the Wildlife Resources Section by the West Virginia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation in 2003 for the construction of additional clearings on the area. His dedication to management of all species of wildlife was also noted at the banquet.

•  Capt. Steve Stewart of Barboursville was presented with the NWTF “Sharp Spur Award” for 2005 during the banquet. With more than 31 years of service to the WVDNR Law Enforcement Section, Capt. Stewart has worked in Districts One and Five and has worked special assignments in many other areas of West Virginia . He is stationed at the DNR St. Albans Office where he currently serves as the District Supervisor for District Five. In this capacity he oversees the law enforcement activities for nine southwestern counties of West Virginia . Capt. Stewart became activity involved in the National Wild Turkey Federation in 2000 when the Four Rivers Chapter was established. He was elected to serve as the chapter treasurer and also served as the J.A.K.E.S. Program Coordinator. The J.A.K.E.S. program involves getting young people ages 17 and under interested and participating in various outdoor activities for a day. To date more than 1,200 kids and their parents have been involved in this program through the Four Rivers Chapter. Conservation officers under Capt. Stewart's supervision have taken an active role in apprehending illegal turkey poaching and baiting of turkeys with officers making arrests each year for these illegal activities.
