January Wonderful West Virginia Magazine

Remembers Photographer and Editor Arnout Hyde Jr.

The January 2006 issue of Wonderful West Virginia, now on sale, is a memorial tribute issue to long-time editor and photographer Arnout Hyde Jr, who died in late 2005. The front cover features a winter cardinal scene photographed by Hyde.

This issue features many examples of Hyde's photography taken throughout his long career. Of special interest is the inclusion of a number of excerpts from his unpublished memoir, written during the last year of his life while he was fighting cancer. Hyde was a wonderful storyteller with both his camera and his word processor, and these tales from his colorful life cover his early years growing up in Kanawha County, his college years as a student at West Virginia University's School of mines and his summers working in a coal mine, his stint in the U.S. Army where he got interested in photography as a career, his first professional magazine sales in the 1960s, and the creation of Wonderful West Virginia magazine. Hyde also provides a loving look at his family and tells of some his most unusual adventures photographing the beautiful state of West Virginia he loved so well.

“For those of you who knew him, some of these tales will be familiar. For me, they are the fabric of my childhood – my favorite stories that he told again and again with wild hand gestures, a joyful gleam in his eyes, and hearty laughter, especially the self-deprecating parts. When our publisher, Harry Price, kindly suggested that we dedicate an issue to his memory, it seemed like a fitting tribute to the man who made so many of us proud to be West Virginians (or West Virginians at heart) by showing the beauty of the place we call home.” -- Lucia Hyde Robinson, daughter of Arnout Hyde Jr. and editor of Wonderful West Virginia.
