Hawks Nest Golf Course Getting High Marks

After four years of reconstruction and renovations by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the golf course at Hawks Nest State Park is once again serving the public with the prominence of its past splendor, according to Hawks Nest Superintendent Tom Shriver.

“The course is young and still in the improvement stages after the first phase of renovations, but is a great place for a day outing,” says Shriver.

The first phase of construction featured new irrigation system and improved turf management with greens. According to a recent United States Golf Association (USGA) Turf Advisory Service Report, marvelous progress has been made to the course.  The results of programs that have been implemented are nothing short of spectacular, the report states.

The 9-hole executive course offers beautiful vistas of the New River and Gauley River valleys. The course is perfect for a short game but very challenging with tight mountainside fairways and target greens. It provides a great game for the novice and those that are looking for a change.  The golf course opens daily at 8 a.m. Cart and club rentals are available at the pro shop. The Hawks Nest State Park club house or the conference room at the lodge is perfect for business meetings or group gatherings.

The Hawks Nest Golf Course will be featuring the first Ansted Lions Club Golf Tournament to support the Sight Project on June 4, 2005 . The tournament is scheduled to start at 9 a.m. at the pro shop. Money generated by this tournament goes towards eye glass purchases and exams as well as support eye surgery for those in West Virginia at WVU Hospital . During the past four years the Ansted Lions Club has provided approximately $10,000 in vision care support in the local community.

Located five miles east of the golf course near the town of Ansted , Hawks Nest State Park features an historic overlook and a 31- room lodge with a beautiful dining room that overlooks the New River and offers casual dining.

Special room and golf packages are available. For more information on the golf course, please call (304) 658-5196 or 1-800-CALL WVA. For information or for registration to the Ansted Lions Club Golf Tournament, please call (304) 632-1361.
